Mauser late 1914 Purported to be Japanese marked
« on: October 17, 2017, 07:15:09 PM »
While actually looking at Mauser rifles for sale I ran across this pistol that is purported to be Japanese marked. The seller is wanting alot! Of money for the rig and I personally don't have any interest in aquiring it. However I thought I would post it up for anyone to chime in to discuss it and whether it's legit or not.

Its known that Mauser did sell/market their products in Japan and the private purchase of pistols occurred. Most examples are not marked in any way and often the only way to connect a Mauser pistol to Japanese use is by bring back papers or provenance of a pistol to a Japanese holster. There are some that are marked but I have never seen consistent markings so there is no claim to all being marked in the same way. The holster with this pistol does appear to be of Japanese style, though there are not enough views of it for me to be certain. I have not see another pistol with similar markings.

Thank you for the insight Burgess. I will try to get back to the ad and see if they have any other photos of the holster

All I can say for certain is it looks like a Japanese holster but could also be of other Asian origin. The belt loop looks added. As far as the rig, I know there are collectors that would pay a premium for Japanese items. I would not pay much over typical value without some provenance as to its origin and even then I would not add a large difference. Thanks for posting the additional pictures. You never mentioned what is being asked for it?
